This parent workshop discussed Distance Learning Tips as well as our home-based platforms: Google Classroom, Webex, and Class Dojo.

welcome parents we are so happy that you're here with us today we know that your children are online a lot on their computer so thank you for taking out of your day to be on the screen one more time and so what we're going to be doing today we're going to be talking about distance learning and home-based websites websites that were using here at our school Nassar Gettys Elementary and so now to introduce ourselves we have the very wonderful Missy Taqueria CTI coach from Margaret Heath Elementary and not only if your colleague of mine but she's a really friend and so she's here because and I'm here because we need love Karen and our school and our students and we want to support you in any way that we can and my name is Claudia Barba and I'm just here at Gettys Elementary so thank we also want to introduce Miss Garcia Gettys principal is Garcia's you could say a few words welcome parents thank you for coming to our first parent workshop for the new school year I'm excited that you're can you get to hear from two wonderful experts are cochera Geddes and is Barbara and CTI coach from Heath Miss cordelia's so you're going to hear great great information I learned early learning new things and I'm just happy to see you and we're going to continue to have more workshops to that the year so stay tuned and I'm they're just going to get better and better and I also want to take this opportunity to introduce our school Community liaison Ms casinos you want to wait Miss Casiano so you that's her and I'll let her say something really quick if she wants to buy a parent's welcome parents get to see a lot of you are so good to have Miss Barber here and helping us and also going to help our parents so we can chat Churchill been so thank you for your support and help bless you all and stay safe I guess thank you very much and talk to you later what we're going to be going over today button if you don't know how to use it I will show you or the latter part of this presentation but if you could type in your name and your child's name and the room number that would be awesome at the we'll be having a raffle we have an In-N-Out gift card so that will be raffled off and we really want you to be included so don't worry if you don't do it right now I will show you how to use the chat option if you're not able to do it. This is our table of contents for today the first thing we're going to be talking about is distance learning and that's Miss Korea he's going to be talking about how what supports we're going to give you support to help you say balance while you are supporting your child's learning at home the second one is which as you all know is our learning platform across the district and we're going to give you tips on how to use the online tool and how to best support your child and the last thing is I will be talking about web class dojo and how to take connected to your child's teacher from home and I'm also going to show you your experience as a parent in real time so now the Miss Korea is going to be thank you mr. She's going to be start talking about this since I first of all I just want to welcome you as well and I'm very very grateful and honored to be here in your presence and working with Miss Barbara she's absolutely amazing place to meet Miss Castellanos Miss Garcia has always super supportive so the first thing when we started this presentation I want you to know where our hearts were we really we really wanted to first start this presentation with self-care because we know that you are now taking on roles like never before you're the teacher you're the tech and so we understand that so first the first message we have for you is be kind to yourself we are I support you were here to support one another and went together we're going to do this first you want to encourage you to do a daily self check take time to take some time for yourself take some deep breaths remind yourself that they perhaps the greatest challenge all of us in this virtual room have faced maintain a level of calm and take care of yourself for a couple of other options for you in the slice on how to do this thing is about being mindful being protective of yourself finding time to relax and I'm going to go over some practices that are practical that don't require a lot of money but there is still beneficial if you put them into practice the first is maintain a sense of community I know it's very difficult right now because of the situation that we're leaving living in and sometimes I know we get frustrated with technology but thank God for technology that we could still remain close pause with loved one a video chat say I'm going to call my best friend is viral will tell you even in our own current role that we have now these can seem super stressful and she'll tell you I'll text her or call her I send it make an appointment next have a little powwow so we can talk about how we can support one another also encourage you to schedule play dates for your student I want you to let soumis free so give him a time to also talk to their friends it's really for them and it's important for you to some of the simple and effective ways that you can take care of yourself take a quick walk go to the park and you can take a hike if you love the Garden State sometime in the garden and if you don't have a garden by herself a little pot that you can fix that do a couple of flowers and helps for you to relax listen to some music I encourage you to play music when you are cooking breakfast for your children what are the things that I'm going to ask you to do because there's a lot of research behind this is a gratitude Journal so Studies have found it down at least three things are grateful and thankful for greater sleep in a greater quality experience of seat and sleep is so important also a word for Marty someone basic component Kelsey I know as mom's you always leave yourself for that you know we're always trying to take care of the Triad but you need to take care of yourself might be seven and eight hours is regular tea and try it out try different things that we're giving you a strategist and see what works for you now I am going to be real is going to come a time or the trivia time in your lifetime maybe now or your field weigh your level is very high or your anxiety go to your doctors talk to your physician but I'm going to tell you the truth the first thing is to do the basic are you sleeping are you eating do you have a healthy diet at sometime they might ask to put you in a referral to speak to someone take care of yourself we want the first thing that we wanted to do for a presentation is please increase did you take some time for yourself read a book take some time in the morning to just sit there with a nice cup of tea and now I know because you guys are here for the Practical and as moms I know how we are we have some tips for you to help your kid the distance running is cheaper than your mind that you need to start with you first to see it here a couple of ideas on how to help you create a state a little corner where the student can see their work now going to be really real with you guys right here so my nephew Jacob right he's a first grader we did this and you might have already done it created a little space will guess what he would do every little chance of God how are we going to do this we created a little corner for the student for my for my nephew and I'm talking about we had to put my cat little box just having a little barrier than you you need to be right there in that section another thing that really works is if you include your child in the process I can't what things you will need for your dad and set a routine especially for the little ones and I seen as David is not in your head but also keeping a school routine we were they would wake up at a certain time and they ain't it it it would take a shower it would get dressed in Tucson and then later on when I talk about Google Classroom I'm also going to tell you about chunking assignment so they're not feeling overwhelmed what is a what is a teacher expect really you're going to have your own expectation review them with them so that they understand and they know what is expected of them I think a lot of times we take for granted that kids understand what they actually need another thing that I encourage you is to have teach them self-regulation so this is something that teachers are already working with students with his social and emotional learning but kids don't really understand what's and their bodies when they so frustrated when they excited when they feel sad so you tell them because you've had that experience help them regulate their Electronics I'm going to tell you I just told you my Jacob story there's so much going on that sometimes those Electronics just keep them but we need to get them out to exercise and give it to them as a reward for the end of the week also for the little ones playing pretend daily work when they're doing their work if you let them know you said okay you're going to be the teacher right now or you going to be the researcher or the mathematician or the artist they get excited and then see themselves in this new hope that with your older children I am the this is not necessarily going to work because they understand so you can just tell him the truth we're going through difficult times right now it's going to be a lot of responsibilities I understand it let's come together as a team one of the things that I want to tell you is follow their interest and get input so for example a lot of our boys might like baseball right a lot of our girls maybe in two different topics fashion whatever it is that they're interested in connected to their learning if the teacher tells a child hey let's read a book let's find a topic that has to do with what they're interested in labor-intensive also Devonte Lee prices but give him a spective feedback be specific be sincere make sure it happens when it happen as soon as possible and offer to help them how can I help you how can we make it better also I know we were used to this plane door work before and now it's like everything is on the computer encourage them to draw something that they learned for that  so you're going to be helping them with their learning and then you're also going to be able to put it up we know Miss Barbara and I we know that you guys are taking a lot you're doing so much and we believe in this cool parental is the only love that is truly selfless unconditional at ultimately always forgiving so cheat for us you guys are heroes in the story you guys are doing a lot so we want you to know. You need to take care of you first give yourself even those by 10 minutes in the morning and then do these little things that we talked about so that your students also have a good experience but I'm going to be really real with you we're going to try to do the best we can just like we're doing despite what some things you're going to have to let go for the well-being of yourself and your family and also your child remember in the end of the story nobody loves your child like you understand that so we just wanted to say apply you for all your efforts and we also wanted to know that we're here for you if you don't mind really quick if you turn on your camera is just so that I can get if your child is in third through sixth grade let me see 36 okay if your child is in TK to second okay so we have experience our little bit different but we're going to show you today we're not going to go over the whole Google Classroom virtual experience so we're going to talk about what you have controlling and you can use to support your child everybody have you seen this is this look familiar when a child goes into Google classroom and then they have their Trials of their different classroom well you see a blue arrow right there you see. three little lines right there you need to become familiar with it because those three little lines are going to get you to see what the student has been able to do what's in calendar when you click on those three little lines you're going to see a drop menu that looks like this you're going to click on that you do they can click on the to do to show you when you click on her to do everything that they have been aside and give them the day that do you know if you want to take on the gun you can also see all of the assignments that they have completed now remember it's those three little lines on the homepage that you click then you get a drop down menu and you click on that you do next another one is the calendar so remember I talked about that you do on that same job that menu you have the calendar and this is awesome too cuz I see I have a student that is right there tips on that calendar also you'll be able to see his assignments for the week so remember how I talked about how chunking assignments so you'll be able to see okay son today or daughter it's Monday this assignment is due but how to say that you have a project coming up on the 16th how about if we do a little bit of that project as well so again history little boy the drop-down menu the two sheets Thrift and the calendar now once your child goes into the classroom this is what they see they're going to see on the top three pages we call these tabs using Google you're going to see The Strain you're going to see class work and they're going to see people we're going to go over stream and classwork is you when they come in there already going to be in most of the time with your students she is an announcement like Miss Barbara is going to talk about it in a little bit you're going to see the links to go into their Google classroom but I also wanted to know they're going to have a green tea or what's expect what did she do that if you look at here it's upcoming it'll show your child what's upcoming next like what's due tomorrow but if you click on the view all as a parent you can ask your child please click on this you're going to get a spreadsheet or a sheet with all the excitement it's going to say when it was a sign when it's do you think turn it in if they have anything missing do you see the clip with the one it's because they had to have to turn something in with it if you look at the filters you can select a sign which is everything that I'm showing you hear your child and you can return work and it'll show you the raid and also show you what they're missing so this is a very important date remember we were on the stream when they go then they have the upcoming you are able to see what they're missing and if you click on return with great you can see their great the next page that is really important and I'm going to have Miss Barbara speak to my teacher in second grade moms out there the classwork page really said stream and then we said classwork this is another important page this is where your child gets to see all of their assignment for example this is a made-up classes for April 13th and 17th they click on the assignment and this is a page that appears here they have access to what they actually have to do what is a sign material they can write a teacher a private message option open but the private messaged the teacher is always there and I want you to incur your students to private message to teacher when they don't understand when they need clarification and when they need to turn their work in they simply this is more of an explanation for those yes and maybe even second graders but but as far as to take Ginger and Spurs were using this classwork page to put are important materials and resources they might have paid for sure they'll teachers me they might and I'm going to talk more about that a little bit later on when we discuss whether they can also have resources like I'd frequency words or sorry different videos and song they might have some seesaw sinus and spicy 40K him first that's what we're working on right now and so even though they go they go there to get their seat assignment and it takes them to see if they don't necessarily have to come back to turn it in because will be checking on cisa it just makes it easier for you so you don't have to figure out how do I get to see soft when you can go directly from and then for Upper Grade Student most of the time they will turn in assignment so this is turn in their work so like I said before the page the way you get to the stage as we are at the string and then it takes you to this page here and then check on the assignment itself it takes them to this page where they have access to all of the materials and the ability to turn it in or leave a message for the parent now before we continue I know we're giving you a lot of information Wegmans Barbara said we're recording this so the recording will be available for you we also at the end of our presentation have all the resources that we use at your disposal to buy I know it's at summer it supposed to say summary on this page the guardian summary right this horn down the guardian summary did you tell your teacher that you want to be to the guardian summary again for the Upper Grade Compass this is what'll happen the teacher will at me your email so she will add you you you will then receive an email invitation you will click accept and you have two options you can get a report for your email weekly or daily so you'll choose an option your daily summaries are sent in the afternoon and your week submarine are sent to you every Friday afternoon finally what you're going to get as a report is all of their assignments missing tedious work class activity all that will come to you in your email especially my parents if you know that your student is struggling remember how we talked about those chickens with their getting this report from the teacher is either on a daily or on a weekly basis and always if I can encourage you when you see the report focus on the positive and discuss what they need to improve always and your how can I help you how can the teacher help you what do you need because again we're all here to support that so I know I went over a lot of information with you but used to create this presentation is on the links to see it and he has a wonderful explanation as well now as vitamin is going to take it away with WebEx fantastic thank you so much your microphone thank you for the amazing presentation we always tell our kids to like we do the same thing as well thank you so much and we're just so blessed to have her cuz she's obviously she's such a great resource so thank you thank you for sharing that so now we're going to go on to WebEx and ClassDojo the first thing teaching students I know some teachers are still using Google meet but it's only a couple of teachers and if we need to do a separate wing it if you have questions please put it in the chat about for me and maybe I can set up a separate time it just a few students that are that are you okay so we're going to talk about 1 so you know how to access your child you go through Google Classroom to access their teachers were so they're in their Google Classroom just like when we were showing you in the office and the cafeteria. The teachers think is right there for WebEx and that's how we set it up for you and so teachers in addition to that just know that if your students are in receive special ed services or speech services or they need to meet for example this week because you so I can give you time to take your your address so just like you did today you have entered your information please check your students every once in awhile cuz sometimes especially with the upper graders instead of writing their real name they might add you know something silly sometimes inappropriate but usually it's just silly so just make sure you check on that like hey what are you into for your information and you'll see cuz that's what your name is when you click next and then at the bottom you can enter your email and then click next and the next thing you see the very first time and it might happen sometimes you have to allow WebEx to access your camera and microphone this box may come up and you have to click on a lap because if you block it that's when your camera doesn't work and your microphone sometimes when I able to hear you and then you're going to see a preview of your screen here so you'll see you can call me make sure you know everything you can use your computer Audio Mic two different audio the mute button and then I wanted to talk about what is sometimes what sometimes that's something that we talked to troubleshoot here at the office and also I've been calling parents to help help with this as well sometimes your might do you have your microphone on it will allow you to it because here in the search bar I'm on the right hand side sometimes it'll be a microphone and if you click on that camera eibach will show up and it'll say allow or blocked so you want to make sure that you're allowing it and you just suggest but just know that we hear as a school I support you so if you have technical issues all of the staff in the office we could trade we have an amazing attacked Mr Lewis and Mr Lopez and he's awesome he's super helpful if he doesn't know the answers he finds them and he and iron contact I'm contacting parents to with different issues and we all try to get to the bottom of it so just know that we're a team and that we're here to support you and just as miss you I think just the way I said I'm not sure if she did or not this our second presentation at the end of this going to drop these lies either in the west side or Class Dojo maybe both and that way you'll have this to refer to them if you needed in the future okay so now I'm going to explore for some WebEx features my session so I'm going to show you my pictures and so I'm going to be sharing my my window and just for you to know my meeting window looks different than yours because I get to have the Brady Bunch window The Brady Bunch means I get to see all of you which is this is what the teachers use to see their students teachers have when the students use a phone book they just need one person really really big whoever's everyone is a little child at the bar just for you to know I'm working with the teachers we just found out this week that there's a way to lock it so that they could lock it on their picture so I'm going in classroom to classroom even if it one of the other students so just know that I'm working with them on that were there doing it ourselves so there's so much and and and technology is changing like where they at you don't have that and a student will not have that option as well and at the bottom you know the mute so if you see it you can see the green tea sets that they can hear you Lisa next to the mute versus Little V and you can choose the speaker issue they might mister Mr Lopez the are checking my guide you through this so then you go let me go to settings and that's where you can go to settings on that stop video I was telling you the parents are one of our do you know if if that happens if you're looking real life right I mean life is going around you know all around your kids and that happens so what you can do really quickly you're going to know they're going to stop by stop the video for a few second let them go by cuz I need to cry right and then you can start that video back up okay because things happen realize we'll just for you to know it's a quick way to lose it and then I said depending on the teacher students with a sock what they're working on I like to use it to my teachers will use it because sometimes I for example during their taking a star reading test and the kids can't get in there so I'll put my WebEx link they come in and I'm liking you please share your screen. and I can walk in through quick hear click their own up make sure we unblock this and so that's also why the share screen also with my work with you and you have a phone as a parent I might have to get on the computer and share your screen as well that are happening that way so just for you to know that. All teachers share their content video the record button you don't need to worry about that party the child's the videos of individuals what's the president's like right now it's a black screen that's being recorded with my voice only because a child's are not being recorded which are your and then he says I'm the host and it here and then over here we have two things we have participant that used to be over here if I click on it you can click on it to I can see all the participants that are in this meeting and there are several things that the teacher can do she can do everybody at once except for the host and then she can unmute them like a chicken tender head and you want to get them so you can hear them Pacific students and so that participants have some type of us if they don't want anyone to see the participants in the classroom and then the other thing is that depends on the classroom management of the teacher turn off the chat button will not even be there or sometimes it'll be available for you to chat with everyone or just the host and the presenter so different and so here is a chat and we are at can you I know that they have been putting it in but I think they've been doing it privately so what I'm going to do is I'm going to highlight it and put it in there for everyone so that you have that so if you haven't done so already passed me this way you have everybody's we're going to show you how to get it on your phone today okay thank you so much and so now we're going to go into class dojo I know it's 5:38 and I want to make sure we have enough time for this did learning all in one space and is everything that our teachers and students love and is all in one place this is the first year that it is our community form for entire school last year we had two different ones I was hard because we wanted to be able to communicate parent to parent in one shot and now we can do that so it doesn't I know that you know that Miss Garcia principal or the assistant principal or I'm also see things there and ClassDojo and then you can connect with every family and we're engaging students in class dojo I wanted to join as a parent because I needed to preserve how am I going to get you something if I don't know what it's like to be a parent as of yesterday I am now a parent and so I have two new children that are attending and so fourth grade teachers and she's our class dojo invite all the teachers and and she's very helpful when it comes to class dojo and so I gave her my cell phone number this came to me in my cell phone and all I had to do was Chris click on Class Dojo I have two videos there that are helpful is an English and Spanish that's about the different ins and outs of ClassDojo if you want to learn more about it once you join Class Dojo the first thing that happens is here you see on this happened on my phone my my kitties at this came up and I had to click on Betty's parents blue button at the bottom once I clicked on that button this screen popped up on my phone I can either get the app at the bottom and at the top I cut it off but at the top it says so if you don't have it you can go to get this it'll take you right to your store and then you can download the app and it's very easy and it's free the next thing that I'm going to show you I'm going to show you things that you can do in class dojo that I didn't know about this so I'm going to show you but I think the most important part is I'm going to show you how you can do it so you can see my child or what's going on in their concert so this is how you can view your child's report I'm going to show you that you can click on your student's name and a minute and then the other the second yellow peril support and I'm going to show you how to do the second thing I'm going to show you in class dojo so Disney Paris if you have enough money for our grandmother and you want them to know what's going on or someone that speaks a different language at home when they sign up for class dojo it could be translated into whatever life they prefer so I'm going to show you how to do that as well and now we're going to experience and I'm going to go to my class dojo parent page so she can you see my class dojo parent page and here you can see there are I have all here's my daughter because I do have two children at the school and then might get student and here right now you see it in Spanish because we Spanish the list Spanish and so I'm going to show you first of all I'm going to show you choose your language as you can tell right now everything is in Spanish but before I go back to English show you how translate it once you're in Spanish then I'll show you how to change change your language okay so I'm going to show you under initial here are all the class story update and as you can tell right now it's it's in Spanish okay now if I want to see the translation if I choose Spanish all I have to do is click on Bancroft but you can choose different types of Chino Mandarin or they have over 30 different languages that you can choose from I'll show you in just a minute so then you can I choked on it so now it's going to translate so I might just and then it'll translate that message for me in Spanish okay second thing I'm going to show you so let me know how I'm going to show you how to so now see I want to choose English as my language so what I did is I click on my name and there's this little carrot right here and I who does it went by really steady and I'm going to show you reshare if I scroll down there is my information and here are my students residencia en espanol so all of these languages I don't even know some of these languages exist in class dojo that's a lot so you click on your language that you need and that way you can translate for you I'm going to show you when you're in the English and scroll down to language preference change it to the language that you have so here's home remember in Spanish and so everything is here but everything's and I she's Brianna my daughter Brianna's teacher mistletoe as she has something down here so sometimes if it's new but sometimes things can get there so just for you to know your teacher has a message for you you click on messages here I have mrs. Ochoa so I can read mrs. Ochoa's message if I kill Spanish as my language it would say translate message and you can just here and then I could I did type something to mrs. Ochoa just for you to know when if I take a message here it'll only go so I can say good evening you know my child needs help with problem 3 on page whatever whatever and then you can send it if you're on your phone was really cool and some of the parents are doing this as a problem with the computer you could take a picture of it on your phone and then add that picture right there that's why it's so easy to be using your phone with class dojo and then you just send it and then if she needs it translated if you send it you write it in Spanish I understand in Mandarin this is my fourth grade students and here's miss my third grade students teacher and so here is hers and I could write a note I can also message her as well just for you to know you might see Miss Garcia in here because teachers were required to have admin so our principles are in there so if you ever wanted to message Miss Darcy and select turning okay so now we're going to go for this is the home button if you want to go you just click on home and now I'm going to show you how you get your student report very very important because you want to know how are they doing in class are they on brakes I want to show you my Yeti students I'm going to click on my daddy suit let's see how she became a student when I clicked on his name is green circle showed up you getting his room his name is getting so that's why you see it here you'll see your child's Room 205 his report so I can click on that report if you can tell if here I can visit this week but I can also choose last week or two weeks ago you can choose up to three weeks and if you click this week okay mrs. Richard let's see what happened I see he has 32 positive comments 0 neutral and that's a pretty good day so I can see that all my goodness look at this rate, he participate I see there's a negative point he was Miss extra math lesson so that means when I get off of this I need to go talk to my little my little kitties and tell him what happened this have your at you need to complete your extra math lesson can you please show it to me and that way we can tell tell your teacher that it's okay so that was class dojo so today remember what we learned in class dojo we learned how to change the language by clicking up here to account settings and change you learn how to translate all the different messages so you can view it in the language that you choose and then the third thing that we did is we learn how to find your student report my daughter Brianna for example she doesn't have a report yet because she just started this afternoon tomorrow I'll have a report for her Mrs Barbara and I think you is custody I know before we get to our thank you and wanted to make because I know a lot of information tonight in these slight you also have links for example like I talk to you about the Google classroom for parents there is a great video here parents and tricks distance learning and in Spanish as well as the information also that is Barbara talked about about WebEx you can find it on this resource and I gave you only a few of the strategies that you can use for self chair but he the complete guide and then also we have four tips for tips on Class Dojo on the mobile app there's a video there for you to like Miss Roberta said this recording of the slides and then we have this Resource page and all you have to do is click on the links and I'll give you more information like we said we're all learning we are so proud of you for taking the time we know you're tired you went to work and blessed call me working with the kids so we wanted to make sure that it was a very thorough presentation and that you're going to have all the tools made available for you so it was an honor to serve you tonight and then I will be closing yes thank you so much for you and just like we're in this together and I can speak for Mars.
